How to Size a Portable Power Station or Battery Bank
Choosing the right portable power station or battery bank starts with understanding two important specifications: capacity and output. Capacity, measured in watt-hours (Wh), determines how much energy the battery can store, while output, measured in watts (W), determines how much power it can supply at one time. Selecting the correct combination ensures your equipment can run your devices reliably without paying for more capacity than you actually need.
The first step is calculating your daily energy consumption. Make a list of every device you plan to power, note its wattage, and estimate how many hours per day it will be used. Multiply the wattage of each device by the number of hours it operates, then add everything together. This gives you your total daily energy requirement in watt-hours.
Once you know your daily energy usage, you can determine the battery capacity you need. Because all power systems experience some energy loss during conversion and operation, it's wise to include a safety margin. Dividing your daily energy requirement by 0.85 provides a practical estimate of the minimum battery capacity required for reliable performance.
Output power is equally important. A battery may have enough stored energy to run your devices for hours, but it must also be capable of delivering sufficient power at any given moment. The power station's continuous output rating should exceed the combined wattage of all devices operating simultaneously. Appliances with motors or compressors, such as refrigerators, pumps, and power tools, often require two to three times their rated power during startup, so additional surge capacity should be considered.
For example, a mini-fridge consuming approximately 60 watts around the clock uses about 1,440 watt-hours per day. Adding roughly 300 watt-hours for charging phones and laptops brings the total daily consumption to about 1,740 watt-hours. After accounting for system losses, a battery capacity of approximately 2,050 watt-hours would be recommended. In this situation, a power station in the 2,000Wh class, especially when paired with solar charging, would be an excellent choice.
As a general guideline, power stations between 300Wh and 600Wh are suitable for charging phones, laptops, lights, and other small electronics during camping trips or emergencies. Units around 1,000Wh are better suited for RV use, small refrigerators, fans, and short power outages. For home backup, off-grid applications, or powering multiple appliances, a system with 2,000Wh or more is often the best option.
If you plan to recharge using solar panels, daily solar production can be estimated by multiplying the panel wattage by the number of peak sun hours and then applying a real-world efficiency factor of about 70 percent. For instance, a 400W solar array receiving five hours of peak sunlight can generate approximately 1,400Wh of usable energy per day.
